Agoda’s GoLocal: Domestic Travel is Just the Ticket  to Satisfy Indonesians’ Wanderlust

Eight out of ten Indonesian travelers are ready and willing to pack their bags and head on a trip according to the GoLocal Domestic Travel survey for digital travel platform Agoda, with 76% set to explore their archipelago in the next 12 months, the second highest market after Vietnam, keen to travel domestically, significantly higher than the global average of 65%. The island of Bali takes the top domestic wishlist destination spot, followed by Jakarta and Yogyakarta.

Travel has become an indispensable part of life for many, and people are keen to get back to it. But there are some changes to where and how people are traveling. Agoda’s GoLocal Domestic Travel survey reveals a shift from international to domestic travel as borders remain closed for many countries, yet the urge to travel continues. Overall, 65% of travelers would like to take domestic trips in the next 12 months, with the top three contenders most keen to do so are Vietnam (87%), Indonesia (76%), and the USA at 74%.

Travel Distances

In this new world of travel, the GoLocal survey found that 44% of travelers from Indonesia are most comfortable traveling a maximum of three to four hours, comparable with the global average of 46%. This is followed by traveling for two hours or less (36%), five to eight hours (15%) and only 6% willing to travel for more than eight hours. Self-Driving is the transport of choice for 24% of Indonesian travelers, with flights leading the way with 57% preferring air travel, in line with global figures.

Go Local and Explore

Whether it’s paradisiacal Bali or culture capital Yogyakarta, two of the top destinations for Indonesians, travelers will find be able to satisfy their travel desires by exploring their backyard. The top type of destinations for Indonesian travelers are beach destinations, countryside and nature and cities for their next adventure.
Gede Gunawan, Agoda’s Country Director for Indonesia, said: “Indonesians’ appetite for travel has not diminished, with people still hungry to explore our diverse archipelago. The top reasons to travel are for quiet and relaxation, food and drink and to visit famous attractions, all of which are in abundance here in Indonesia. Whether that’s getting close to nature, soaking up the sun at our beautiful beaches or enjoying the variety of local delicacies and cuisines across our country, there are so many hidden gems for us all to visit, a short flight, train ride or easy drive away.”

Agoda’s Gems in My Backyard Photo Competition

As part of its GoLocal campaign which encourages traveler to explore more of their own backyard and with up to 25% savings on domestic hotels across the country, Agoda is launching a photography competition to capture the beauty and diversity of Indonesia.

This Agoda Gems in My Backyard photography competition, supported by the Indonesia Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, invites Indonesian residents to share via Instagram photos featuring Indonesia’s hidden gems with #PermataKotaku, and reasons why other Indonesians should visit this place. The photos will be judged by Arbain Rambey and Aryono Huboyo Djati, experienced and esteemed photographers in Indonesia.

“The competition is set to encourage more people to travel all across Indonesia, not just traditional tourist areas. We all know a special hidden gem in our own locale which tourists and sometimes locals don’t even know about. So, with this Gems in My Backyard competition, Agoda hopes to inspire even more Indonesians to discover treasures close to home,” continued Mr Gunawan.

A winner and two runner-ups will win USD1200, USD800 and USD500 AgodaCash respectively, to spend on accommodation anywhere in Indonesia. The competition will launch on 5 August 2020, 12:00 (GMT +7) and end on 19 August 2020, 12:00 (GMT +7).

The Agoda GoLocal Domestic Travel Survey was commissioned as part of Agoda’s GoLocal campaign to support domestic and local tourism by encouraging travelers to discover gems in their own country.
