Bangkok Airways has introduced a passenger weight check survey, joining a growing list of airlines such as Korean Air to implement similar measures.
The announcement by Bangkok Airways, made on 14 September via its official Facebook page, informed travellers that the weight check survey would be conducted between 15 September and 31 October 2023.
The move is aimed at enhancing flight safety and efficiency, says Bangkok Airways. Conducting such surveys is crucial to ensure that both passenger and baggage weights do not exceed maximum take-off weight limitations, thus contributing to safer flights.
Bangkok Airways will weigh passengers and their carry-on bags at the boarding gate. The airline reassured passengers that the information would be kept confidential. Those who prefer not to participate can simply inform the airline staff.
The adoption of these measures aligns with the standard protocol established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Collecting passenger weight data allows airlines to precisely calculate the required amount of fuel for each flight, resulting in significant fuel savings, potentially reaching up to US$1 billion annually. Additionally, it contributes to overall flight efficiency and safety.
