The National Museum in Jakarta is granting Asian Games athletes and officials from various countries free admission from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2.

“This is the National Museum’s form of appreciation for participants of the 2018 Asian Games who are quite familiar with the history of Indonesia’s civilization, pluralism and cultural treasures,” National Museum head Siswanto said on Friday.

He said the athletes and officials could show their Asian Games identity cards to obtain free tickets. To welcome the Games, the museum will also reopen a part of building A where statues and inscriptions from the Indonesian archipelago are displayed.

Building A has been closed for renovation since 2016. “In 2016, we moved our collections and in 2017 the renovation was completed. On Aug. 18, we will reopen the building,” he added.

In addition, the National Museum, in cooperation with the Education and Culture Ministry, has organized for the Games an exhibition on the 1962 Games, which saw Indonesia host the event for the first time.

The ministry’s history director, Triana Wulandari, said the historical collections on display would cover photos, stamps, magazines, newspapers and memorabilia in the form of souvenirs from the fourth Asian Games.

Jakarta and Palembang are the co-hosts for this year’s Games, which take place from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2.
