As Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM 2026) gains momentum, Malaysia has scored an early win by retaining its position as the world’s top Muslim-friendly destination for the 11th consecutive year at this year’s Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI).
However, a more interesting observation from the report this year is how Muslim travellers themselves are changing.
Released by Mastercard and CrescentRating, the GMTI 2026 found that while global uncertainty continues to shape travel decisions, Muslim travellers are still travelling, albeit differently. They may not be cancelling trips, but are choosing destinations that feel easier to reach, more familiar and meet their travel requirements.
“As global volatility shifts travel demand toward closer, safer, and more predictable home-continent corridors, destination agility is important,” said Fazal Bahardeen, CEO, CrescentRating & HalalTrip.
Destinations that adapt quickly to Muslim traveller’s needs, such as adopting culturally respectful services that include availability of halal food, prayer facilities, a safe environment, and ease of entry – these are the ones that will gain the most trust and confidence with Muslim travellers.
Malaysia holds its lead
It is against this backdrop that Malaysia retained the top position globally with a score of 83.
“The recognition points to Malaysia’s mature halal ecosystem, which is complemented by the Muslim-friendly standards introduced by Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) for the tourism and hospitality sector,” said ITC director-general Mohammad Faisal Abu Suaib Khan, speaking to Travel Weekly Asia exclusively.
“This gives choice and ease to tourists, beyond just halal food and prayer spaces. It signals safety, respect, welcome, and so travellers will have less to worry and more to explore in Malaysia.”
Proximity gains favour
Southeast Asia continues to strengthen its position as a destination for Muslim travellers, supported by proximity to major source markets, established halal ecosystems and a mix of culture, food and experiences. At the same time, competition continues to grow.
Indonesia climbed to share second position globally alongside Turkiye and Saudi Arabia, while Singapore remained the highest-ranked non-OIC destination. Thailand, the Philippines, Japan and South Korea also showed momentum.
